A complete, practical governance operating framework for third sector organisations

1 The promise

Helping you deliver more effective and lasting outcomes for your beneficiaries through improved governance.

2 The problem

You are part of our essential sector because you want to make a positive difference to the lives or environment of your beneficiaries. Our sector is more closely scrutinised than ever before. And quite rightly.  It can only exist with the trust and support of the public.

Cases such as The Captain Tom Foundation’s misconduct and mismanagement damage public trust and confidence in the whole sector:

Failures in governance generally fall into six categories:

Weak board oversight and lack of knowledge of good governance

Conflicts of interest

Financial mismanagement

Poor handling of reputational risk and public communications

None of these reflect a lack of commitment from trustees in our sector. They reflect the need for better support.

3 The solution

To enable you to access better support I have developed the Governance Framework - a complete, practical governance improvement framework for third sector organisations, to help you deliver more effective and lasting outcomes for your beneficiaries.

4 The outcomes

It will also help your organisation:

6 Why trust me.

Over several decades, I’ve had the privilege of working both as an advisor supporting, guiding, advising and mentoring hundreds of third sector organisations in person and on-line, and as a practitioner establishing and running a Social Enterprise.

That experience has shown me that TSOs are always looking for practical ways to strengthen their impact and be more sustainable.

Currently I am supporting organisations with life cycles from start-up to wind-up.

9 Questions

Why should we pay when there's so much free governance guidance available?

When I conduct training, I ask attendees 3 questions: What do you do? What are your purposes?  What is your organisation’s legal form? It is no surprise to me that the vast majority of attendees cannot answer these questions.  You can try this yourself. Not just with your board members, but your volunteers, staff, other stakeholders and beneficiaries. At the most fundamental level, would a reasonable person expect your board members and staff to be able to answer those questions? That’s called the “reasonable person test” or “objective standard” which is used by the judiciary.

Is this just a re-print of the Regulators advice?

No.  It is a framework based on 30 years of engagement with TSOs, understanding the common problems, and provides a practical, step-by-step solution to these problems.

We have trustee insurance, so we’re protected against claims.

Negligence trumps nearly everything, including liability insurance. The complete governance improvement framework for third sector organisations is one -step before a fire-extinguisher. It provides the practical help and tools to stop a fire before it starts.

We’re just a little organisation; we don’t need it.

If you are incorporated (a Company, CIO, SCIO, Trust, CiC etc) each of your board members has entered into a contract which, at its least, requires them to comply with their relevant Charity, Company and all other wider laws and regulations. A reasonable person would expect them to know this.  If you are unincorporated, power is vested with the office bearers. This applies regardless of the size (however you measure it) of the organisation.

We don’t have the time or resources to do this.

You probably have the majority of what you need already – the complete governance improvement framework for third sector shows you how to compile and collate what you already have. It also provides templates you can tailor or use directly for the parts you may not have. At the end of the day though, governance is not a spectator sport.  It’s something you should be considering at every business (board or committee meeting)
